Big news, friends! This month marks one full year since we launched our Shelter Sponsorship Program, offering donated walks to adoptable shelter dogs at Richmond Animal Care & Control! Want to learn how you can get involved? Read on to find out!
Why Sponsoring Matters
Life in a shelter can be stressful for dogs. Many of them have known the comforts of a home before, only to find themselves in a kennel through no fault of their own. While RACC does an incredible job caring for these animals, the reality is that shelter staff and volunteers have limited time and resources. Dogs can spend weeks or even months waiting for a family, and the stress of that environment can sometimes make it harder for them to find a home.
That’s where our program comes in! Our sponsored Shelter Outings provide RACC dogs with much-needed breaks from the shelter. These outings help them decompress, enjoy enrichment activities, and showcase their true personalities to potential adopters. Whether it’s a long walk in the park, a trip to a pet-friendly store, or just some extra one-on-one attention, these experiences make a world of difference for these pups.
How It Works
- Sponsor an Outing – Anyone can sponsor a shelter dog! Your sponsorship covers the cost of a fun and enriching adventure for a pup in need.
- Adventure Time! – One of our highly trained professional dog walkers will head to RACC, pick up a shelter dog in need of a break, and take them on a special adventure. Depending on the weather, this could be a walk on a scenic trail, an outing to a dog-friendly business, or an indoor enrichment session.
- Spreading the Word – After the outing, we provide RACC with detailed feedback on the dog’s behavior, likes, and personality traits, helping them better match pups with potential adopters. We also share the adventure on our social media to boost adoption visibility!
How You Can Help
Want to help our local animal shelters, but not sure where to start? Big or small, there are plenty of ways to show your support!
- Sponsor an Outing – For a small donation, you can provide an enrichment-filled outing to a dog in need, thereby increasing their chance of finding their forever family!
- Adopt or Foster – If you’re looking for a new best friend, consider adopting from RACC. Not ready for a long-term commitment? Fostering helps dogs get out of the shelter and into a home environment, increasing their chances of adoption.
- Spread the Word – Share our social media posts to help these dogs gain more exposure and find their forever homes.
- Donate – RACC always appreciates donations, whether it’s supplies, time, or financial contributions.

Our shelters are extremely overcrowded, and so many people want to help but may not be able to adopt. By sponsoring an outing, you’re providing a much-needed break for a shelter dog, giving them a chance to show their true, wonderful selves and in turn, more easily find their forever families.
