Helping Shelter Dogs Through Sponsorships: How You Can Get Involved Too

Hi friends – it’s Austin here, founder of Tuckered Out Dog Walking, and I want to take a moment to share something especially close to my heart: our Shelter Sponsorship Program. This initiative has become a core part of who we are as a company—helping shelter dogs at Richmond Animal Care & Control and bringing together our core values in the most meaningful way.

If you’ve ever wished you could do something to help shelter dogs, but don’t have the physical space to bring them home, or the time to volunteer or foster, this program might be exactly what you’re looking for!

What Is the Shelter Sponsorship Program?

At its core, this program is simple: you sponsor a field trip for a shelter dog, and we do the rest. You make a small donation, and we pick the highest-need dog up from Richmond Animal Care & Control, take them on a 60-minute trail walk, then return them to the shelter feeling refreshed, all while providing valuable behavior notes to the shelter staff. After our outing, we also post photos, videos, and a written update on our social media pages to help spread the word and find the dog the perfect forever home!

Through our partnership with Richmond Animal Care & Control, our team brings enrichment-based outings to dogs who need a break from the stress of shelter life. We focus especially on those who’ve been overlooked, have been there a while, or just aren’t coping well with kennel stress.

These outings give them a chance to just be dogs—and to be seen by the greater public and potential adopters.

How It Helps Shelter Dogs

Imagine this: a dog who’s been sitting in a kennel for weeks (or even months) gets to hop into a car with the windows down, sniff around on a shady trail, roll in some grass, and stretch out for a pup cup and a nap in the sun. For many dogs, this is their first chance in ages to feel relaxed, safe, and joyful.

Each field trip is planned with their comfort in mind. Our team is Fear Free certified and trained in dog body language and handling, which means that we know exactly how to read dog stress signals and adjust the outing to their comfort level. If a dog freezes on the trail, we switch to calming activities or even a pup cup adventure instead of pushing forward.

Dogs who spend just 60 minutes outside the shelter show reduced pacing, barking, and other signs of kennel stressed when returned, which helps RACC staff manage the shelter floor. These outings also help show off each dog’s real personality in the real world, which can be huge when it comes to getting adopted.

How It Helps Shelter Staff

RACC does amazing work with limited resources. This program gives their team a bit of breathing room by letting us step in and offer some one-on-one attention and decompression for dogs who really need it.

Every dog we take out is one more pup getting socialized, enriched, and noticed. We document each outing thoroughly and share the dog’s photos and personality notes with RACC staff to help boost exposure and ensure each dog is placed with the perfect family, boosting adoptions and reducing returns.

We’ve even had dogs find their families directly because of these outings. (Yes, we cried. Every time.)

The Real Impact of the Shelter Sponsorship Program

Since we launched the program in March 2024 (16 months ago from the time of this article), we have:

❤️ Completed 168 shelter outings

❤️ Walked 162 shelter dogs

❤️ Served 65 sponsors

What’s even better, we saw a 95% adoption rate for the dogs who were featured in this program. That’s 154 dogs who YOU helped get adopted since March 2024, with more to come in the months and years ahead!

Ways To Get Involved

You can sponsor a shelter outing in two different ways:

🦴 One-Time Sponsorship – Perfect for gifts, birthdays, memorials, or just because you want to brighten a dog’s day.

🐾 Monthly Sponsorship – An ongoing way to support multiple dogs over time. It helps keep the program running consistently and lets us say yes to more pups each week.

Your donation directly covers a dog’s personalized 60-minute field trip, including transportation, treats and supplies, software, and staff time.

What’s In It For You As A Sponsor

Sponsoring a dog isn’t just a feel-good moment (though it’s definitely that too). Here’s what you’ll receive:

📸 A personalized report card with photos and an update about the dog you sponsored—where they went, what they did, and how much they enjoyed their time.

📣 A social media shoutout (with your name or business tagged, if you’d like!)

We’ve had folks sponsor in honor of birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and even to memorialize a beloved pet. It’s a beautiful way to give back and make a real impact.
