Memorial Day weekend is almost here, and if you’re like us, you’re already dreaming of sunshine, cold drinks, and extra time with your favorite four-legged sidekick. ☀️🐶 While the holiday is first and foremost a time to honor and remember those who served, it’s also a moment to slow down and enjoy the company of the ones we love—pups included. Whether you’re staying in the city or looking to explore a new pocket of Richmond, we’ve rounded up some local, dog-friendly ways to spend the long weekend.
Explore the Outdoors
Belle Isle
For RVA dogs who love water, rocks, and sniffing everything in sight, this is paradise. Belle Isle is connected by a pedestrian footbridge under the Lee Bridge and offers shaded trails, river views, and shallow spots where confident pups can splash. Bring a leash, fresh water, and a towel—this one gets messy in the best way.
Forest Hill Park
Tucked away in Southside, this spot is a gem for a quieter dog walking experience. The wooded trails offer plenty of shade, and the lower lake area is great for a picnic. (Bonus points: If you go Sunday morning, you can swing by the South of the James Farmers Market and grab a treat for you and your pup!)
Byrd Park
This classic Richmond staple has wide-open green space, walking paths around Swan Lake, and plenty of people-watching for your pup. Pack a blanket and some snacks for a low-key afternoon, and check the Dogwood Dell schedule—there are sometimes free concerts or performances happening over the weekend. Some of these events may even allow leashed dogs, especially outdoor ceremonies or park concerts, but it’s always a good idea to double-check before heading out. If your dog tends to get overwhelmed in large crowds or with loud noises, you may want to skip the events and opt for a cozy backyard celebration instead.
Speaking of loud noises—fireworks and pets don’t mix. Even if your neighborhood isn’t hosting an official display, backyard celebrations can be stressful for many animals. Try creating a calm space with background noise (TV, fans, or music), enrichment activities, and frozen treats. If your dog is particularly sensitive, you might even consider a dog-safe anxiety wrap or checking in with your vet ahead of time.
Brunch & Patio Hangs
The Daily Kitchen & Bar
If your dog is a pro at patio lounging, The Daily in Carytown is a great choice. With a menu full of local, fresh options for humans and a staff that loves pups, it’s a feel-good way to start your day. The shaded patio fills up fast on weekends, so try to arrive early.
Union Market
Order sandwiches or charcuterie to go, then stroll through Church Hill. The overlook is one of the prettiest views in Richmond, and there’s usually plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the breeze. Dogs are always welcome on the patio here, and there’s often a water bowl out front for thirsty visitors.
Ruff Canine Club
For the social pups (and humans), Ruff is part off-leash dog park, part beer garden located in Scott’s Addition. This members-only hangout is perfect if your dog loves to play while you sip a cold drink. They’ve got shaded seating, agility structures, and lots of friendly faces. Just make sure your pup is up to date on vaccines before visiting!
Make Your Own Backyard Bash
Not every pup is a social butterfly, and that’s okay! If you’re staying home, you can still make the day special. Try:
Setting up a kiddie pool or sprinkler
Making frozen treats (like yogurt and peanut butter in a Kong!)
Playing enrichment games like hide-and-seek with treats
Creating a shaded lounging spot for your pup to soak in the vibes
Don’t forget to keep the snacks safe—grapes, onions, chocolate, cannabis, and alcohol are all big no-nos for dogs. If you’re hosting, it never hurts to share a quick reminder with guests to be mindful of where food and drinks are placed.
Whether you’re adventuring by the river, relaxing in a neighborhood park, or hanging out in your own backyard, Memorial Day is a chance to enjoy life a little slower—with paws by your side. We hope you have a safe, joy-filled weekend with your pup! See you out there, RVA!
