Dog Walking in The Fan District, Richmond VA
Tuckered Out Dog Walking is based in Lakeside (23228), right in the heart of Henrico County. This is home turf. When we say we serve western Henrico, we mean we live here, drive these streets daily, and know which parks allow dogs off-leash and which paths flood after rain.
Our service area covers the Lakeside, Willow Lawn, Libbie Mill, Bellevue, and Ginter Park, including zip codes 23228, 23227, and 23230. If your dog is home alone while you’re at the office, Tuckered Out fills that midday gap with a professional, insured walker who shows up on time and treats your dog like family.
Existing clients can book same-day with a 2-hour turnaround. That means a coverage gap at 9 a.m. doesn’t have to mean a miserable afternoon for your dog.

Apartment Dogs in a Rowhouse Neighborhood
The Fan was designed for streetcar-era living. The housing stock reflects it: pre-1940 Victorian rowhouses, duplexes carved from larger homes, apartment conversions. Almost none of it comes with a private yard. No backyard access. No place to let your dog out for five minutes when you’re stuck on a call that ran long.
That’s the structural reality for about 66.5% of Fan residents who rent their homes.
Add in the neighborhood’s median age of 31 and its proximity to VCU, and you get a population of young professionals and graduate students running M-F schedules with little flexibility in the middle of the day. The dog needs out. The calendar doesn’t bend.
WFH professionals in The Fan run into the same gap from the other direction: they’re home, but they’re heads-down, and the dog is restless by noon. An enrichment walk or a 60-minute outing handles that without the dog landing on your keyboard during a Zoom.
The Fan’s walkability is genuinely exceptional. What it doesn’t have is anywhere private to let a dog decompress. That’s the gap we fill.

Walking The Fan’s Streets and Parks
The Fan’s best walking infrastructure starts right outside your front door.
The Fan’s best walking infrastructure starts right outside your front door.
Monument Avenue is the crown jewel. The wide, grassy, tree-shaded median runs east-west through the heart of the neighborhood, and it’s genuinely one of the finest urban dog-walking corridors in any American city. Low traffic, mature canopy, comfortable benches, and long flat stretches that suit any pace. This is where our walkers spend most of their Monument Avenue routing time, and for good reason. Leash required throughout.
Scuffletown Park is the neighborhood’s beloved pocket park, tucked into an alley off Strawberry Street between Strawberry St and Stafford Ave. It’s small, quiet, and has a separate fenced area for off-leash time. For Fan dogs who need a little freedom between walks, this is the neighborhood gem.
For bigger outings, Byrd Park is a short drive away at 287 acres, with Barker Field Dog Park inside for off-leash runs. Barker Field inside is a popular off-leash option for pet parents on their own time. For field trips, we use Byrd Park’s leashed trails and the James River trail system.
Named streets matter here too. Strawberry St, Robinson St, Hanover Ave, and Floyd Ave are the blocks our walkers know on foot. When we say we serve The Fan, we mean we know where the uneven sections of sidewalk are and which blocks have the best shade in August.
Fan Veterinary Clinic (307 N. Robinson St) has been serving the neighborhood since 1981 and was named Style Weekly’s Best Veterinarian in Richmond 2025. Good to know your nearest vet by name.

Your Dog Walker in The Fan
Our walkers are W-2 employees with workers’ compensation coverage, not independent contractors posted to a gig app. Every walker completes a 24-hour training program before their first solo visit: two hours of orientation, six hours of online modules (including Pet Pro Hero CPR and First Aid certification), twelve hours of supervised field training alongside an experienced team lead, and a final four-hour solo shift with a formal review. Formal check-ins continue at 30, 90, 180, and 365 days.
Austin Tuck is Fear Free Certified, and that philosophy shapes everything about how the team works. Force-free handling, cue-based interactions, no aversive tools. The team holds PSI membership through Pet Sitters International for ongoing continuing education.
We accept fewer than half a percent of walker applicants. The Fan is a neighborhood that takes its standards seriously. So do we.
Tuckered Out was named CommunityVotes Richmond 2025 Winner by Richmond readers. That recognition comes from existing clients in neighborhoods exactly like this one.
For clients already set up with us, same-day booking with two-hour turnaround is available when schedule allows. New clients begin with a Meet & Greet, available same-day, with a first walk the following day.

Can you walk my dog from my apartment in The Fan?
Yes. We walk dogs from apartments, duplexes, rowhouse conversions, and any other unit type throughout The Fan. Your walker handles building access, leashing up, the walk itself, and the return. If your building has a particular entry procedure, we’ll confirm the details during your Meet & Greet.
How quickly can I book a dog walk in The Fan?
Existing clients can book same-day with a two-hour turnaround when we have space available. New clients start with a Meet & Greet, which is available same-day in many cases, with a first walk scheduled for the following day. We’re the only Richmond dog walking company with that kind of turnaround.
What makes Tuckered Out different from Rover walkers in The Fan?
Our walkers are W-2 employees covered by workers’ compensation, not gig workers. Every walker completes a 24-hour structured training program and holds Pet Pro Hero CPR and First Aid certification. Austin is Fear Free Certified and that approach runs through all of our training. We also offer same-day booking with a two-hour turnaround for existing clients. There are over 2,200 walkers listed on Rover in the Richmond area. None of them offer that combination.
