How We Handle Snow Days at Tuckered Out Dog Walking: Winter Pet Care in Richmond, VA

Snow days in Richmond don’t mean your pup’s routine has to come to a screeching halt—and we don’t stop either (as long as it’s safe, of course!). At Tuckered Out Dog Walking, our winter weather policies are designed to give you peace of mind while keeping your furry family members warm, safe, and well-cared for.

Pet Care Doesn’t Stop for Snow

Richmond winters might not be as intense as some parts of the country, but we still get our share of surprise snowstorms and icy conditions (as we saw just last week). That’s why we’ve developed a clear winter weather policy to guide our team and keep our clients informed during snow days.

Our goals are simple:

✅ Keep your pets happy and maintain their routine as much as possible
✅ Prioritize safety for our team and your animals
✅ Communicate early and transparently so you’re never left wondering

Who Gets Seen First on Snow Days?

When winter weather hits, we may need to adjust our schedule or routes slightly to ensure our dog walkers are able to stay safe on the roads. Here’s how we prioritize visits during inclement weather:

  1. Pets with time-sensitive needs (medications, health conditions, or strict schedules)
  2. Pets whose guardians are out of town (no backup care plan available)
  3. Dogs needing potty breaks or exercise (we know they can’t wait forever)
  4. Work from home clients (especially those booking longer enrichment outings)
  5. Cats and other “self-sufficient” pets (still incredibly important, just slightly less urgent during storms)

If you’re home and don’t need your visit during a storm, we encourage you to cancel, and there’s never a cancellation fee on snow days, as long as you let us know by 8am so we can finalize our routes. Thank you for keeping our team safe!

How You Can Help Us Help Your Pets

To keep visits safe and seamless, here are a few things that make a huge difference:

  • Clear and salt your driveway and walkways with pet-safe ice melt before our scheduled visit
  • Let us know if you’d like us to adjust the thermostat or take any precautions to protect your home
  • Have a backup contact on file such as a neighbor, friend, or family member we can reach if road conditions cause delays

The more prepared we all are, the better we can care for your pets when Mother Nature gets a little moody.

Communication is Everything

We’ll send out weather alerts as soon as snow is in the forecast, and we’ll always:

  • Notify you proactively if delays are expected
  • Let you know immediately if we make a company-wide decision to postpone non-essential visits (like extended outings for guardians who are home)
  • Offer support and guidance if you’re unsure what’s best for your pet

You can also reach out to us anytime directly through your client app for real-time updates.
